Mozart is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the classical period and the recital opens with one of his finest works. But there is unrest in Europe, both politically and artistically and the death of Beethoven sees the end of the classical period and ushers in a new era of Romanticism and Nationalism in music.

Initially, it starts as a reaction against the dominance of "German" music (that is, the European classical tradition) and later developes alongside the growing movements for national liberation that characterised much of the 1800s

The first half of the concert explores the East with music from Slovakia, Russia as well as the Nordic countries. As the second half slowly takes us through Europe we eventually arrive in the New World. The concert culminates with a brand new arrangement of George Gerswin's ever popular 'An American In Paris'
